What are buck teeth?
Buck teeth is the casual term used for an overbite or protruding teeth condition. This type of misalignment occurs when the upper front teeth close out far ahead of your lower teeth when you close your mouth.02
Do overbites worsen with age?
Yes, overbites can worsen with age as the space between the upper and lower front teeth can increase over time; this worsens the overbite. A deep overbite is more concerning and will require additional restorative treatment to be fixed.03
What is considered a severe overbite?
A normal overbite is when the vertical overlap is 2mm to 4mm. When the gap is between 4 mm to 6 mm or more, it is known as a deep bite or deep overbite. When the upper teeth completely envelop the lower teeth and even go into the lower gum, it is called a severe overbite.

What are the causes of an overbite?
- Hereditary and genetic causes such as a particular jaw size and shape being passed on
- Sucking in the thumb past the age of 3 or 4 can cause buck teeth
- Sucking on Pacifiers, just like the thumb can cause an overbite
- Tongue-thrusting causes overbite
- Teeth problems such as extra, impacted or missing teeth can cause buck teeth

What are the types of overbites?
There are two groups of crossbites: dental and skeletal overbite. Skeletal overbites happen as a result of improper jawbone development which causes the jaw and teeth to grow incorrectly. A dental overbite occurs as a result of misaligned teeth i.e. when teeth are in the wrong position.06
What happens if I don’t treat buck teeth?
If you do leave your buck teeth untreated, it can lead to overall oral and health problems such as decaying teeth, cavities, difficulty in eating and chewing, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), speech issues and breathing disorders.07
What causes an overbite?
An overbite is generally caused by a skeletal problem, dental problem or a combination of both.08
Can an overbite be fixed naturally?
No, an overbite cannot be fixed naturally, you will have to use either aligners, braces or go through surgery. It is possible to avert overbites that are caused by childhood habits like the use of pacifiers, thumb-sucking, and chewing pencils.09
What are the various treatment options for an overbite?
- Aligners – removable and transparent plastic trays that are firmly fitted on your teeth and apply pressure progressively achieving the perfect position
- Braces – use of metal brackets and wires to push the buck teeth to the desired position
- Palate expansion – this is used to treat overbite conditions in children and adolescents whose jaw is too small. It is an appliance attached to upper teeth to slowly widen the jaw and palate
- Jaw surgery in the case of a severe overbite condition
